Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity paid on wealth that has been held for one full lunar year (hawl) and exceeds the nisab threshold. It is 2.5% of all qualifying wealth and is a right that the poor have over the wealth of those who are more fortunate.
Allah ﷻ says: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify and sanctify them." (Quran 9:103)
Who must pay Zakat?
Zakat is obligatory on every adult Muslim who:
Is sane and free
Owns wealth above the nisab threshold
Has held that wealth for one complete lunar year (hawl)
The wealth is in excess of basic needs
What assets are zakatable?
Gold & Silver: All forms — bullion, coins, jewelry (scholarly difference on jewelry worn regularly)
Cash & Bank Savings: All money including current and savings accounts
Business Inventory: Goods held for trade and sale
Investments: Stocks (the zakatable portion), business assets
Money owed to you: Receivables you expect to collect
Agricultural produce: Separate calculation applies
